Shelters and adoption

Adopt, foster or help. It all counts.

Shelters by province

How to adopt, step by step

  1. Think it through. They’ll live with you for over fifteen years: time, home, holidays and costs.
  2. Contact the shelter. They’ll help you choose by personality, not by photo.
  3. Questionnaire and interview. Sometimes a home visit or a few days of fostering.
  4. Contract. Usually includes microchip, vaccines and neutering, with a fee that covers part of the cost.
  5. Microchip in your name on the RAIA, the Andalusian register.
  6. First days. Calm, a quiet corner and a vet check-up.

Spain’s Ley 7/2023 plans a course and insurance for dog owners; some of it is still pending.

How to report animal cruelty

Immediate danger? Call 112 (help is usually available in English).

If it’s not urgent:

  • Guardia Civil (SEPRONA): 062
  • Policía Local: 092 in many towns
  • Policía Nacional: 091

Give the place, date, photos if you can take them safely, and witnesses. Don’t confront anyone.
